McAlester Tourism says to Watch for Potential Scam

McAlester Tourism on Facebook is warning of a potential scam of an event that does not exist. In a post on Facebook, they say that a local vendor reached out wanting clarification on an event called “McWinter Wonderland.”

The vendor said they knew it was a scam because of the type of payment being requested and form of communication. McAlester Tourism says to be cautious and look for a couple of factors to determine if you’re being scammed.

The factors include being cautious on how and where you received the information about an event, and trust your instincts. If it seems too good to be true, it might be.

  1. Verify the event. If it’s hard to verify or you have concern, contact the venue or McAlester Tourism about the event. They will let you know  about it or will help you research the event itself.
  2. Be leery of alternate or strange forms of payments. Make sure you are protected, all around.
  3. Requesting more information is never bad. Does the event have a website? Flier? Vendor form? Event page?
  4. Watch for poor grammar and punctuation.
  5. Being overly eager and pushy for you to book now
