Ron Perry, who represented District 5 of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma on the southeast Oklahoma tribal nation’s council resigned his office effective Tuesday.
The resignation took effect immediately.
Perry, who was first elected in 2011, was serving as secretary of the Tribal Council and represented tribal members living in Haskell County and parts of Pittsburg and LeFlore Counties.
Because there was more than one year remaining in Perry’s term, the tribe’s Constitution calls for a special election to be held to fill his seat. The position will remain open until the election.
The timing of the special election has not yet been determined.
