OSBI Investigates Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting In Kiowa

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon in Kiowa, authorities said.

A Kiowa police officer stopped a vehicle for speeding just before 3:30 p.m. along State Highway 69, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. When officers attempted to contact the driver, identified as 35-year-old Brandon Potts, he failed to comply with verbal commands and produced two knives, officials said.

An officer then fired his weapon, striking Potts. Officers provided life-saving measures at the scene before Potts was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

The Kiowa Police Department requested the OSBI to investigate the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, and once completed, the OSBI will submit its findings to the Pittsburg County District Attorney’s Office for review.
