The Oklahoma Insurance Department has revoked the license of McAlester insurance producer Cheri Ellis and issued a $12,000 fine following an investigation by the agency’s Anti-Fraud Unit.
According to the department, investigators began looking into Ellis after receiving five complaints alleging she misappropriated more than $90,000 in customer premium payments, issued a fraudulent certificate of insurance and misrepresented premium amounts owed by consumers.
State officials said a show-cause hearing was held Nov. 13, 2025, before an independent examiner, but Ellis failed to appear. Following the hearing, officials determined Ellis failed to forward premium payments to insurers, resulting in canceled policies for several customers.
Investigators also found she failed to return premium payments within the required timeframe and provided a false or altered certificate of insurance to one customer.
The department said Ellis also misled multiple insured clients by accepting more than the required premium amounts, changing payment terms and providing inaccurate information regarding policy cancellations.
Ellis owned an Independent Insurance Agency in McAlester, according to the Oklahoma Insurance Department.
