
A McAlester man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities say he entered a Krebs residence without permission and assaulted a man during in May.
Derick Dewayne Clifton, 37, is charged in Pittsburg County District Court with third-degree burglary, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and assault and battery. Prosecutors have also filed a sentencing enhancement alleging prior felony convictions.
According to an affidavit, Krebs police responded May 31 to a residence on Main Street after receiving a report of a burglary in progress. Officers reported finding Clifton inside the home’s laundry room after a resident called 911 and said an unknown man had entered the house.
The resident told officers he found Clifton inside the residence and attempted to remove him. During the confrontation, authorities allege Clifton struck the resident in the face before running from the home. Officers later located Clifton nearby and took him into custody after a brief struggle.
Officers later allegedly found a glass pipe commonly used for narcotics consumption in Clifton’s possession. Police also reported observing signs that Clifton was under the influence, including rapid speech and behavior consistent with stimulant use.
Court records show prosecutors are seeking an enhanced sentence based on prior Pittsburg County felony convictions, including possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of methamphetamine and endeavoring to manufacture methamphetamine.
Clifton is currently being held over on a $25,000 bond.
