A McAlester man was arrested Tuesday after a traffic stop led police to discover methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded handgun in his vehicle, authorities said.
John Edward Price Jr., 19, faces charges including carrying a firearm as a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, driving with a canceled license, and failure to stop at a yield sign.
The arrest also marks a violation of his parole stemming from a March case where he pleaded no contest to endangering others while eluding police and bringing contraband into jail.
According to an affidavit, an officer of the McAlester Police Department stopped a blue Chevrolet Malibu near South 10th Street and East Delaware Avenue after observing the vehicle fail to stop at a yield sign.
When approached, Price reportedly admitted he did not have a valid driver’s license, which was confirmed canceled by law enforcement records.
During an inventory search of the vehicle before impoundment, officers allegedly found a marijuana grinder and leafy substance consistent with marijuana, methamphetamine, and paraphernalia, and a Glock 17 9mm handgun with an extended magazine.
Court records indicate Price was given a $50,000 bond on the new charges. The day after his arrest, an application to accelerate the deferred judgment from his previous case was filed, setting a separate bond of $15,000, which added to the cumulative bond of $65,000 for all charges.
