McAlester Man Charged With Assault With Dangerous Weapon

A McAlester man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he threatened another man with a knife during an incident last month.

Derrick Eugene Cook, 49, is charged in Pittsburg County District Court with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, investigators say the victim went to Cook’s home in the 600 block of East Crisler Avenue to take him to Carl Albert Mental Health Center for an injection appointment on Feb. 26.

The victim told police Cook initially appeared calm but later began acting erratically and yelling about money.

Authorities allege Cook pulled a knife from his pocket, threatened to kill the victim and pressed the knife against the victim’s abdomen while moving it up and down in a threatening manner.

The victim told police the knife appeared to be spring-loaded and that although the blade did not puncture his skin, he could feel the blade against him.

The victim told police he was able to move the knife away and step back. The two later left for the mental health center, where the victim reported Cook allegedly intimidated a nurse and displayed the knife by lifting his shirt but did not remove it.

Cook also pled guilty in 2025 on a threatening to perform an act of violence charge and was given a 12-month suspended sentence, which has been revoked with the 2026 arrest.

Cook is currently being held on a $51,500 bond and his next court date is set for Thursday, March 12.
