The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma will mark the opening of its new McAlester Judicial Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Judicial Center, located at 1129 S. George Nigh Expressway in McAlester.
Tribal officials say the new judicial center is aimed at improving access to court services in the northern portion of the reservation, where a significant number of cases originate. More than 40% of criminal and juvenile deprived cases, along with nearly 30% of guardianship cases, come from northern counties within the Choctaw Nation’s jurisdiction.
Leaders say the new location is expected to enhance court efficiency while making it easier for families to navigate legal matters such as guardianship, divorce and juvenile cases.
Several Choctaw Nation leaders are expected to attend the ceremony, including Chief Gary Batton, Assistant Chief Jack Austin Jr., Chief Justice David Burrage and Presiding District Judge Amy Pierce.
The opening marks an expansion of the Choctaw Nation’s judicial infrastructure as demand for court services continues to grow across its jurisdiction.
