Early voting is underway for McAlester’s April 7 special election, with voters deciding three city-related ballot questions, including a proposed sales tax for road improvements.
Early voting is being held at the Pittsburg County Election Board, located at 1609 N. Strong Blvd., Suite 200. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
On the ballot is a proposed 1% sales tax that, if approved, would be dedicated to repairing and maintaining city streets and related infrastructure. The measure includes a 10-year sunset provision and specifies the funds cannot be used for salaries or unrelated expenses.
Voters will also consider a proposed change to the city’s current $1 million voter-approval requirement. The amendment would allow city leaders to respond more quickly to major needs without requiring a public vote for certain expenditures.
A third proposition would update the city manager hiring rules, allowing a broader range of qualified candidates to be considered for the position.
