The City of McAlester landfill will close at 10 a.m. Thursday for mandatory staff training and is scheduled to reopen at 8 a.m. Friday.
Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly and complete any landfill visits prior to the temporary closure.
The landfill, located at 256 Mitchell Road north of Highway 270, is available to City of McAlester residents only. Proof of residency, including a valid water bill and identification, is required for access. Commercial and contractor waste is not accepted.
The facility accepts bulk waste, brush, and metal, and all materials must be separated by type upon arrival. In accordance with state regulations, all loads must be covered during transport. Items such as appliances, electronics, and hazardous materials, including chemicals, are not accepted.
Regular landfill hours are 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on the second Saturday of each month, excluding holidays.
For residents seeking alternative disposal or recycling options during the closure, the McAlester Recycling Center, located at 301 E. Polk Avenue, remains open. The drive-through recycling area is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and accepts materials such as cardboard, plastics, glass, and aluminum.
All items must be clean, sorted, and bagged prior to drop-off.
The City of McAlester appreciates the public’s understanding as staff complete this required training to maintain safe and efficient operations.
