McAlester Teacher Charged In Student Assault Case

A McAlester teacher has been charged following an investigation into an incident involving a student at a local elementary school.

Anna Thompson, 48, is charged in Pittsburg County District Court with misdemeanor assault and battery on a student.

According to a probable cause affidavit, campus police were contacted April 17, about an alleged disruptive student inside a classroom at Will Rogers Elementary School.

Investigators reported the student was taken into an adjacent room after becoming upset and crying.

A timeline included in the affidavit alleges that Thompson later entered the room and placed the student on the floor. Thompson then allegedly grabbed the student’s arm and dragged the student across the room.

The report states the student continued crying following the interaction. Authorities say video footage of the incident was later reviewed, and concerns were raised about the level of force used.

The affidavit also notes the student has a documented emotional disability. Officials reported the matter to supervisors following the review of the footage, and the incident was documented by campus police.

Court records indicate Thompson was arrested, but later posted her $5,000 bond. Her next court date is set for May 13.
