McAlester officials highlighted continued investment in parks, economic development and infrastructure during April in the city manager’s monthly report released this week.
Among the month’s listed accomplishments was the completion of a new playground at Rotary Park through a partnership involving the Choctaw Nation, GameTime Playgrounds and the City of McAlester. The playground includes ADA-accessible features designed for children of all abilities.
The city also continued expanding its aviation education partnership with McAlester Public Schools through discovery flights at McAlester Regional Airport. The program gives students hands-on exposure to aviation, aerospace engineering and skilled trades careers.
Another highlighted project was the restoration and relocation of the Centennial Clock to Arvest Park. The clock, originally installed during Oklahoma’s centennial celebration in 2007, was restored with help from Leadership McAlester Class of 2025 and community donors.
Economic development activity also continued across the city. Officials reported progress at the new Academy Sports location, the opening of 7 Brew Coffee and Pho Daily, and plans for a future Glo Tanning location at The Shops at McAlester. City staff also continued discussions regarding additional retail, restaurant, housing and industrial projects.
At the airport, officials said the taxiway rehabilitation project substantially reached completion and business jet traffic increased during the month.
The report also noted McAlester Tourism has started pursuing Film Friendly Community designation through the Oklahoma Film + Music Office in an effort to attract future film and entertainment opportunities.
Financially, the city reported its general fund remained ahead of projections through April, with approximately $14.4 million collected in revenue.
Community development officials also reported nearly $3.9 million in year-to-date improvement values through April as infrastructure and development projects continued throughout the city.
