The Pittsburg County Free Fair is coming up in September, and we have been bringing you periodic updates of what to expect this year. The free fair is hosting Live entertainment on Friday evening Sep. 6th starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Expo Hall. The Creek Howlers are the opening act for the Bo Phillips Band. This is a free event.
This year the Chili Cook-Off has returned. The Pittsburg County CattleWomen is sponsoring this event. There are cash prizes and a People’s Choice is part of the judging.
An Auctioneering Class has been added to the FFA division. The contest will be held on Thursday evening, September 5 following the Open Talent Show. Each contestant will auction two items to the general public. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the scholarships awarded at the Pittsburg County Junior Livestock Show held in the spring.
The Goat Show has been moved to Saturday Morning with all of the other livestock shows. Showing begins with the Swine at 8:00 a.m. Talent Show check-in will be at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5. The talent show categories range from 3-years-old through adults. Entry fee of $5 for individual acts and $10 for group acts with all entry fees paid back to the winners.
Magician Marty Westerman gives a FREE performance on Thursday evening beginning at 5:00 in Room 101 of the Expo. He is the opening act for the Talent Show. These events are open for all Pittsburg County resident to enter and everyone else to enjoy.
The Youth Day begins at 9:00 a.m. on Friday and includes demonstrations by the McAlester Fire Department, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department, Emergency Management, Beekeepers Association, McAlester Library and emergency Management.
The participants will also enjoy performances by Magician Marty Westerman and Boocoos the Clown. They will also have the opportunity to visit a petting zoo and the Clydesdales. The Poultry and Rabbit exhibits are always of interest to several fairgoers.
There are Judging Contests, and a Tractor Driving Contest held on Thursday and Friday mornings for 4-H, FFA and FCCLA members. We’ll have more information and updates up until the free fair gets rolling in September.
