The Jefferson Highway Association has unveiled new signage marking the historic route through Oklahoma. This achievement follows years of planning and is supported by funding from the Oklahoma Historical Society. The signage, featuring Oklahoma’s new logo and historic design elements, highlights the Jefferson Highway’s significance as one of the earliest transcontinental routes in the U.S., stretching from Canada to Louisiana.
Delaina Durrett-Stevens, President of the Oklahoma Chapter, emphasized the effort involved and expressed excitement about the project’s completion. The signage installation comes after the 2021 designation of the highway as a historic byway by Governor Kevin Stitt.
The new markers, mainly along US Highway 69, are a key milestone for both the association and Oklahoma, celebrating the state’s historical heritage. While initial installations are complete, efforts will continue to address gaps in signage.
The 2025 International Jefferson Highway Conference will be held in McAlester, Oklahoma, showcasing the highway’s history and the state’s dedication to preserving it.
