Construction on the Waterway Trail project will begin on September 26, 2024, and is expected to last about 109 days. Spanning nearly one mile from the Public Service Company of Oklahoma building on Electric Avenue to Monroe Avenue near the McAlester Regional Health Center, this project is funded primarily by a $1.1 million grant from the Transportation Alternatives Program, awarded in August 2016.
Part of the McAlester Trails Master Plan, the Waterway Trail aims to connect neighborhoods, parks, and key locations, promoting active transportation, public health, and environmental stewardship. It will provide safe access for walkers, runners, and cyclists to healthcare, housing, and community services. Residents should be aware of potential detours or temporary road closures during construction.
