The McAlester Community Tree Board has been awarded a $28,705 Urban & Community Forestry grant by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Forest Service for the project “Shade and Story: Transforming Mullen Park.” This initiative will enhance Mullen Park by planting 50 native trees and installing an irrigation system. Additionally, the Board is collaborating with the McAlester Public Library to create a Story Walk along the park’s trail, promoting literacy and outdoor activity. Bilingual tree care brochures in English and Choctaw will also be available.
Lacey Sudderth, president of the Tree Board, expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing its role in beautifying the park and fostering community connections. The grant supports statewide urban forestry efforts and was selected for its potential community impact.
The Tree Board and the library are eager to start work on this project, which aims to improve both the environment and the community’s educational resources. For more information, you can contact Lacey Sudderth at 918-426-0930.
