McAlester Launches Lead and Copper Line Inventory to Ensure Safe Drinking Water

The City of McAlester is conducting an inventory and inspection of water service lines as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Revised Lead and Copper Rule. This nationwide initiative aims to ensure safe drinking water by identifying and replacing lead or galvanized steel service lines that could potentially introduce lead into drinking water.

The city has already distributed a questionnaire earlier this year and will soon ask customers to complete a new one to help guide this process. That questionnaire can be found here http://https://www.cityofmcalester.com/residents/utilities/lead_and_copper_questionnaire.php

The goal is to comply with updated EPA regulations and enhance water quality for the community.

Although McAlester’s treated water does not contain lead, lead can sometimes leach from older public or private service lines made from materials like lead or galvanized steel. The program aims to identify and replace these service lines to improve safety.

For more information or assistance determining service line material, contact the City’s Utilities Department at 918-423-9300 ext. 4990 or 4995.
