Residents Urged to Winterize Plumbing as Temperatures Drop

As temperatures continue to drop, McAlester residents are being reminded of the importance of winterizing their plumbing to prevent pipes from freezing. Frozen pipes are a major concern during cold spells, as they can burst and lead to costly water damage.

One of the most effective ways to prevent freezing pipes is to ensure that areas of the home most exposed to cold weather, such as attics, basements, and garages, are properly insulated. You can also keep your thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and night, instead of using colder temperatures at night.

In addition to this, residents should open cabinet doors beneath sinks, especially those on exterior walls, to allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes. During extremely cold nights, it’s also recommended to leave a faucet dripping slightly to keep water moving through the pipes to prevent freezing.
