McAlester’s 37th Annual Pittsburg County Holiday Commission Celebration will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 17-18. This year’s theme, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Non-Violence 365,” aligns with the national observance.
The event begins Friday, January 17, at 11 a.m. with the Dr. MLK Jr. Commemorative Ceremony at Mount Triumph Baptist Church (408 E. Wyandotte). The free, one-hour service will feature keynote speaker Rev. Aaron Williams, pastor of Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Hartshorne, and musical selections by the McAlester MLK Unity Choir. Lunch will be provided to students and teachers from McAlester Public Schools.
The celebration continues Saturday, January 18, at 6 p.m. with the Annual Dr. MLK Jr. Unity Banquet at the MHS Cafetorium (One Buffalo Dr.). Keynote speaker Steve Lewis, former Oklahoma House Speaker, will address attendees. The evening includes musical performances and the presentation of awards in categories like Humanitarian and Outstanding Youth Scholarships. Dinner will be catered by Marty House. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.
