City Budget Discussed at Council Meeting

City Manager Dave Andren presented a positive mid-year budget review to the McAlester City Council on Tuesday, Jan. 28, highlighting a nearly $400,000 increase in General Fund revenues, matched by a rise in expenditures. Despite this, the city remains under budget for both revenues and expenses, ensuring financial stability.

The McAlester Public Works Authority (MPWA) also saw growth in revenue and spending, with major spring projects expected to increase costs. Sales tax revenues have remained steady, despite a temporary dip in November due to a grocery tax issue.

Key infrastructure improvements were discussed and they include LED lighting retrofits, pavement management, and upgrades to the water treatment plant. The city assumed full control of the plant in July 2024, boosting efficiency and expected to save $75,000 annually in energy costs.

Additionally, McAlester has invested in new equipment, including police vehicles and storm water management tools. These efforts emphasize the city’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and enhancing public services for residents.
