Pittsburg County Commissioners have set a special election to fill the position of sheriff, following the resignation of former Sheriff Chris Morris. The primary election will take place on June 16, 2026, with a potential runoff on Aug. 25 and the general election scheduled for Nov. 3.
Morris resigned after facing felony charges of embezzlement and bribery. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of embezzlement and agreed not to take office for the four-year term beginning Jan. 2, 2025.
Frankie McClendon, who was appointed to serve as sheriff until the special election, has announced his intention to run for the office. State statute Title 51, Section 10.E requires a special election to fill the remainder of an unexpired term after an appointment to a county office.
