McAlester City Council Takes Action on Consent Agenda, Discusses Key Issues

The McAlester City Council voted on several items during its latest meeting under the consent agenda. Among the approved items were the minutes from the Jan. 28 regular meeting and claims for Jan. 22-Feb. 4. Council members also concurred with City Manager’s reappointment of Municipal Judge Deborah Hackler for a two-year term.

Other consent agenda items included the indefinite postponement of tort claims filed by Bryce Dawson, Velva Moore, Hanna Miller, and the City of McAlester, as well as the approval of certain costs related to the fire department.

The council also voted to conduct a public hearing on dilapidated structures deemed dangerous due to age, deterioration, or lack of proper sanitation. One property was removed from the condemnation list to allow new owners time to make repairs, while the remaining properties were approved for condemnation.

Council members also heard from citizens regarding the potential designation of a commercial area to be named the Railway District. The Planning Commission had recommended the creation and extension of the district. However, the council decided to table the matter until an ordinance related to the district is created.
