Council Votes Down Street Name Change, Approves Medical District Permit

On Tuesday, the McAlester City Council rejected a proposed ordinance that aimed to change the name of a section of Karen Court to Grace Court. The Planning Commission had reviewed the request in both January and March, ultimately voting 5-3 in favor of the name change. However, the council’s vote dismissed the proposal, maintaining the existing name.

In other business, the council approved a resolution granting a Use Permit After Review for a property located north of 1005 N. Dr. Willa A. Strong Blvd., within the city’s Medical Overlay District. The property comprises Lot 1 and the eastern 20 feet of Lot 2, Block 153, in McAlester, formerly known as South McAlester, in Pittsburg County.

The approved permit allows for “medical staff facilities and similar uses, including offices, educational and meeting facilities,” as outlined in Section 62-275 of the municipal code. The site is intended to house Air Med staff, providing space for offices and sleeping quarters.

Although the property met all technical requirements, final approval required a council vote. The Planning Commission had unanimously recommended the permit’s approval on March 18.
