Celebrate Arbor Day at Mullen Park with McAlester Community Tree Board

The McAlester Community Tree Board is excited to announce the celebration of Arbor Day on Saturday, April 26th, at 10:00 AM at William P. Mullen Park, located at A Street and West Springer Ave. in McAlester.

This event, dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and conservation, promises to be an engaging and educational experience for the local community. Arbor Day, a tradition that celebrates the importance of trees and encourages their planting and care, is a significant occasion for fostering a deeper connection to nature and sustainable practices.

The McAlester Community Tree Board is proud to commemorate this day in a memorable and impactful manner. As part of the festivities, Aaron Alsip, owner of RL Tree Care, LLC., will demonstrate proper tree planting techniques. The Kiamichi Forestry Research Station will give away free Loblolly Pine seedlings while supplies last.

These initiatives aim to empower individuals to contribute actively to the preservation and enhancement of our natural environment. Additionally, local bird enthusiast and Tree Board member Patty Harrison will be present to share her knowledge and passion for birdwatching. Harrison will provide tips and guidance on observing and appreciating the diverse avian species that inhabit our region, fostering an appreciation for wildlife conservation.

This year’s Arbor Day celebration will also mark the official unveiling of the brand-new StoryWalk® at Mullen Park, made possible through the “Shade and Story: Transforming Mullen Park” grant awarded through the Urban & Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act. The StoryWalk® combines literacy and outdoor exploration, inviting families to enjoy reading while walking along a scenic path through the park.

“We are thrilled to host this Arbor Day celebration at Mullen Park,” Tree Board President Lacey Sudderth said. “We’re especially proud to unveil our new StoryWalk®, a project that brings together literacy, learning, and the love of the outdoors.”

To add even more fun to the day, families can participate in a scavenger hunt with prizes for those who complete the challenge. It’s a great way for children and adults alike to explore, learn, and win something special along the way!
