Stigler Man Arrested After Alleged Hostage Situation, Firearm Threats

Duane Hogan

A Stigler man was arrested last Thursday evening after allegedly holding a woman against her will and threatening her with a shotgun inside a rural Pittsburg County residence, authorities said. The suspect, identified as 62-year-old Duane Hogan, was taken into custody by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office following a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance.

Dispatch received a report around 6:09 p.m. on May 15 that Hogan was armed and refusing to let a woman leave the residence. The caller indicated Hogan was holding the woman hostage and had threatened her with a firearm.

While en route, deputies were informed that the woman had escaped and would meet officers at a Sinclair gas station on Highway 9. The woman told deputies that Hogan returned home from work in a paranoid state, accused her of hiding people in the house, and became physically and verbally aggressive.

According to an affidavit, the victim said Hogan blocked the door to prevent her from leaving, scratched her, and pointed a gun at her multiple times while making threats to kill her. She also said she had audio recordings of the threats on her phone.

The woman reported that the incident escalated over a disagreement about dinner. She attempted to leave but said Hogan blocked the exit and threatened her life unless she stayed. She also claimed Hogan had previously discharged his shotgun inside the home because he believed intruders were present.

She described a pattern of threatening behavior over the past month and said she had been attempting to leave the relationship for several weeks. Deputies administered a domestic violence lethality screening and provided her with victim resources, which she declined at that time.

Deputies later contacted Hogan at the residence. He was detained without incident and agreed to speak with investigators after being read his Miranda rights.

Hogan told deputies he believed there were intruders in the home and accused the woman of assaulting him. He admitted to standing in front of the door to prevent her from leaving but denied pointing a gun at her. He said he frequently carried a shotgun due to concerns about the surrounding neighborhood and admitted to firing warning shots in the air on prior occasions.

Deputies later recovered a loaded Magtech single-shot 20-gauge shotgun from the home with assistance from Hogan’s mother. Four additional shotgun shells were found on Hogan during booking.

Hogan was transported to the Pittsburg County Criminal Justice Center and booked without further incident, and received a $50,000 bond along with a no contact stipulation with the victim if he is to make bond. He is being charged with kidnapping, possessing firearm in commission of a felony, assault with a dangerous weapon, and domestic abuse assault and battery.
