Mayor Few Declares State of Emergency for May 24 Storm

In response to recent storm damage, Mayor Justin Few declared a state of emergency for the May 24, 2025 storms, and will waive fees for two weeks — while also looking into taking further action to assist the public.

The emergency declaration authorizes City Manager Dave Andren to take actions to alleviate the public stress from the weather event. The city is temporarily waiving all open burn permit fees for residents. While the permit itself is still required for safety and regulatory reasons, residents can now obtain one at no cost.

“This is a practical first step we can take to help our residents recover faster while still keeping safety a top priority,” said McAlester Mayor Justin Few. “We understand that many people are dealing with large volumes of limbs and brush. Waiving the fee removes a barrier while still allowing us to monitor and manage safe burning practices.”

Permits are still required to ensure that all open burns follow city regulations, including size limitations and location guidelines. Burn piles must be monitored at all times. Permits are not required for small, restricted burns — such as an outdoor fireplace, personal fire pits, or burn barrels.

Residents may burn tree debris on their own property with an approved open burn permit. Fees associated with this permit are being waived until June 15, 2025, but must be obtained through the Open Gov system at https://mcalesterok.portal.opengov.com/ or by visiting the permits office at City Hall. All burns are subject to safety regulations and weather conditions.

In addition to burning, residents also have the option to bundle debris for curbside pickup or haul it to the City Landfill—which is also extending its hours. Normal hours include Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon, and the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Landfill will also be open to McAlester residents from 8 a.m. to noon on May 31 and June 7 for brush only. Commercial and contractor waste is not accepted and Landfill is located at 256 Mitchell Road north of Highway 270.
