A McAlester man was arrested Tuesday after fleeing from police and hiding under a bed in a stranger’s home, authorities said.
Police say Toby Wells, 43, took off on a bicycle after officers responded to a disturbance on North Main Street. He later abandoned the bike and ran through multiple yards before entering a home near North 2nd Street. Children in the house told officers a man had come inside and motioned for them to stay quiet.
Wells was found hiding under a bed and refused to come out, prompting officers to pull him out and detain him. He was allegedly carrying meth, marijuana, a knife, and multiple credit cards not in his name.
The homeowner said she did not know Wells or permit him to enter. He faces charges including first-degree burglary, obstruction, drug possession, and public intoxication. Police say he also had a warrant for possession of a firearm after a felony.
Wells is being held on a cumulative bond of $840,000, which includes charges from previous cases.
