McAlester man set to to be sentenced for 2024 shooting

Larry Mickle

A McAlester man federally indicted for shooting a woman in the head in June 2024 is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday — with the shooting victim requesting leniency.

Larry Keith Mickle, 49, entered a guilty plea in December to an indictment charging him with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.

Mickle was originally indicted in Sept. 2024 with assault with intent to commit murder in Indian Country, assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country, assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country, and use, carry, brandish, and discharge a firearm during an in relation to a crime of violence.

He is currently scheduled to be sentenced at the federal courthouse in Muskogee on Tuesday.

An affidavit filed in the case states deputies from the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office were called to the McAlester Regional Health Center after a woman was brought into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the head.

The woman told deputies Mickle got into an argument with her when he grabbed her by the throat and choked her before she felt something on her head, the affidavit states.

“At first, the victim thought (Mickle) had shot the wall, however, the victim realized she had suffered a gunshot wound because her ears were ringing, and she felt an indentation on the top of her head,” court records state. “Victim stated that after the gun went off, defendant started ‘freaking out’ and denied that he had shot her.”

The woman was taken to the hospital by a neighbor, where she was later flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa area hospital, according to the affidavit.

Mickle was arrested two weeks later following a manhunt.

According to pre-sentence documents filed by the prosecution, the victim acknowledges that what Mickle did was wrong, “and that he deserved to go to prison, but she was vehemently against him serving a lengthy period of incarceration for the offense.”

Mickle remains charged in Pittsburg County District Court with shooting with intent to kill, domestic assault and battery by strangulation, and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction.
