A juvenile driver died days after an all-terrain vehicle crash that occurred on the night of July 4 in rural Pittsburg County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
According to reports, the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. on Douglas Road near Canyon Road, about one mile north of Longtown. Authorities said a 2019 Polaris Sportsman ATV was traveling north when the driver lost control while negotiating a curve. The vehicle rolled and crashed on a gravel roadway.
The juvenile driver was pinned beneath the vehicle for approximately five minutes before being transported to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. The driver ultimately died from injuries on July 8, officials said.
A juvenile passenger was also treated at the scene and released the same night.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet, according to the Highway Patrol. The ATV was not equipped with seat belts or airbags. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Trooper Dustin Jenson of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Troop D detachment in Pittsburg County investigated the incident.
