Choctaw Nation District 5 goes to runoff

Earl Smith and Jennifer Turner

With none of the seven candidates garnering more than 50 percent of the vote on Saturday, a runoff election is now set for Choctaw Nation District 5.

Unofficial results from the Choctaw Nation Election Board show Jennifer Turner and Earl Smith as the top two candidates following Saturday’s General Election.

Turner received 343 votes (34.27%) of the votes, with Smith receiving 201 votes (20.08%).

The special election for District 5 was called after the April 1 resignation of Ron Perr,y after he was charged with six counts of sexual battery.

Turner said in a social media post that she was deeply humbled and grateful to have advanced to the runoff.

“While today we rest, the race is FAR FROM OVER,” Turner wrote. “I give all the glory to God for allowing me this opportunity, and I remain committed to walking this path in faith and service.”

Smith thanked his family, friends, and supporters for their support as he heads into the runoff against Turner.

“As I move forward, I am vowing to try to visit with as many of you as I possibly can because I truly want to hear from you and listen to what your hope is for Choctaw Nation,” Smith wrote.

According to the Choctaw Nation, Turner and Smith will advance to an Aug. 9 runoff election.
