The City of McAlester’s storm debris cleanup operation is nearing completion as crews continue work in the final portion of Phase 5 and prepare to conclude the months-long effort ahead of the Aug. 8 deadline.
Cleanup teams began Tuesday along South Strong Boulevard and South Street, with traffic control measures in place. The city is urging drivers to slow down and watch for workers in these active zones. Crews will next move into the area south of South Street, starting in the Redbud neighborhood. Officials expect Phase 5 to be completed by the end of this week.
Final pickups in Phases 4 and 5 are wrapping up this week as well. Crews have thoroughly covered these areas throughout the progression, and all debris placed curbside by July 29 has been collected or is scheduled.
Residents who believe they were missed in Phases 1, 2, or 3 may still contact the City at 918-421-4922. Crews will revisit those addresses already on record, but no new debris piles will be accepted moving forward. Residents are strongly urged not to place any new debris at the curb after today.
Storm debris crews began Phase 5 ahead of schedule and have continued hauling large quantities of material each day. Since the operation began, the City has removed an estimated 1.3 million pounds, or 650 tons of debris.
During the first week alone, crews hauled away approximately 90,000 pounds per day. The final day for debris collection will be Friday, August 8, although staff anticipate completing cleanup efforts ahead of this date.
