The McAlester Activity Coalition held a meeting on Monday at the Southeast Expo Center to discuss details on the previously announced expansion to the facility titled “Southeast Motor Speedway,” which would include a drag strip as well as mud bogg and mega truck courses.
Richard Bedford, who recently became the facilities manager of the Expo, stated the different activities that could be utilized with the new additions, such as ATVs, Motocross, tractor pulls and sand races.
Bedford said the Expo Center is looking at installing sewer and water lines in the existing RV parking area.
“This would help with the increased demands and the new track with people traveling from all over,” said Bedford.
Anticipated travelers visiting McAlester for the events held at the Southeast Motor Speedway were a recurring topic in the meeting, emphasizing the significant economic impact it could have on McAlester through both tax revenue and marketing opportunities.
Bedford said that the raceway dragstrip will “mostly be done by sponsorships and donations.” More details on the expansion will come at a later date.
In addition to the proposed plans for the Southeast Motor Speedway, Bedford said he wants to see the Expo Center utilized for a multitude of events, such as a “Christmas Village” and increased use of the outdoor amphitheater.
“This event center and the grounds serve not only as a place to have events, but a place for families to make memories,” said Bedford. “My job and my passion are not only to see it succeed, but to see it grow and become a better place for others that will want to visit.”
