McAlester City Council to Consider April Charter Election and Local Projects

The McAlester City Council will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 28 E. Washington Ave., to consider a special charter election, zoning changes, infrastructure projects, budget amendments and other city business.

Council members will hold a public hearing and consider an ordinance calling a special election April 7 for voters to approve or reject proposed changes to the McAlester City Charter. An update from the L’Ouverture Historical Committee on research with the Oklahoma Historical Preservation Office and National Park Service is also on the agenda.

Infrastructure items include a resolution to submit a 2026 U.S. Department of Transportation BUILD grant application, a $26,125 reduction to the Steven Taylor Industrial Park Sewer Improvement Project, and final payments for two Drinking Water State Revolving Fund projects: the Stonewall Railroad Crossing and Kiamichi/Carl Albert water system improvements.

Two zoning changes are scheduled for discussion, including a proposal to rezone property to a highway commercial district and another to convert portions of North McAlester property from commercial to single-family residential use.

Council members will also consider amending the city’s fiscal year 2025-26 budget, approving a contract for inmate labor crews and authorizing a raw water purchase agreement with Black Mountain Energy Services.

An executive session to discuss personnel matters is planned, with possible action afterward.
