Voters are deciding today on a $4.7 million McAlester Public Schools bond proposal to build a new STEM facility with a state-of-the-art safe room on the high school campus.
The measure follows a unanimous vote by the district’s Board of Education to relaunch the “Investing in Our Herd” initiative after a much larger bond proposal failed last year.
If approved, the bond would fund modern STEM classrooms, hands-on learning labs and space for the district’s aerospace and robotics programs. The safe room would also serve as a storm shelter for students and staff.
The project was previously part of a $41 million bond proposal that received about 30% of the vote in September 2025. District officials later scaled the plan back to focus on the STEM facility as the top priority.
The current proposal totals $4.7 million and would be funded over five years, resulting in a 9% increase in property taxes.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for voters to cast ballots on the bond issue.
