City to Host Town Hall Ahead of April 7 Streets and Infrastructure Election

The City of McAlester is set to host a town hall at the S. Arch Thompson Auditorium in McAlester on Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m., where residents can meet the new Citizens Street Improvement Commission, hear directly from city leadership, and ask questions about the April 7 special election on a proposed 1 percent city sales tax focused on city roads.

The town hall will include remarks and a question-and-answer session with McAlester City Manager, Mayor Justin Few, and members of the McAlester City Council, along with the newly appointed members of the Citizens Street Improvement Commission.

The City Council recently approved the creation of the Citizens Street Improvement Commission, a citizen-led body intended to strengthen public oversight and maintain a citywide focus on street-related priorities and infrastructure planning. If the proposed 1 percent city sales tax is approved by voters, spending would be guided by the commission, with all spending subject to public oversight and regular audits.

“The intent is a citywide, transparent approach to street planning,” Mayor Justin Few said. “This town hall gives residents a chance to meet the commission, hear directly from city leadership, and get answers before they vote.”

Following the commission’s creation, councilors voted to approve the Mayor’s appointments of:

  • Tim Isenberg, At-Large member
  • Fred Ettner, Ward 2 Representative
  • Rodney Quickle, Ward 6 Representative

Additional information regarding the commission’s scope of work, meeting schedule, and opportunities for public participation will be shared as it becomes available.
