A McAlester man is facing a federal charge after authorities say he possessed methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.

David Clayton Spears has been charged by criminal complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

According to the complaint, the charge stems from an incident on or about Sept. 4, 2025.

An affidavit states a denim bag containing contraband was located inside the laundry facility at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. Investigators reported the bag contained approximately 2.2 ounces of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, about 60 grams of a white crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, five THC wax containers and 27 vape cartridges.

The affidavit states investigators with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General conducted an investigation and determined Spears, an employee at the facility, conspired with inmates to smuggle narcotics and other contraband into the prison.

According to the affidavit, surveillance footage showed a denim bag on the back of a forklift operated by Spears entering the laundry facility, where it was later taken inside.

Investigators reported a cellphone recovered from an inmate contained messages referencing payments and communication with Spears, including a Cash App username associated with him.

The affidavit further states methamphetamine was later located in a vehicle driven by Spears. Authorities reported testing identified that substance as methamphetamine.

Court records show a federal arrest warrant was issued, and Spears was taken into custody April 3, 2026, in McAlester.
