Emergency crews in McAlester and across Pittsburg County are responding to storm damage Monday after severe weather swept through the area. Officials are urging residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary to allow emergency personnel and utility crews to operate safely.
The McAlester-Pittsburg County Emergency Management office is coordinating local response and recovery efforts and said they will have a better update of the aftermath by Tuesday morning when asked for comment.
More than 7,000 power outages have been reported in the 74501 ZIP code. Utility providers are working to restore service, and residents are encouraged to report outages directly to their power company.
Storm-related debris and downed power lines have blocked several roads. Authorities are warning the public to stay away from affected areas, avoid downed lines, and follow posted detours and instructions from public safety officials.
Residents should call 911 only for life-threatening emergencies. For non-emergency storm issues, the McAlester non-emergency line is available at (918) 423-1212. If you have any pictures of debris, you can email them to chase@mcalesterradio.com
