McAlester man sentenced to prison for 2024 shooting

Larry Mickle

A McAlester man federally indicted for shooting a woman in the head in June 2024 was sentenced to serve less than five years in a federal prison.

Larry Keith Mickle, 49, entered a guilty plea in December to an indictment charging him with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.

Court records show Mickle was sentenced Tuesday to serve 57 months in a federal prison along with three years of supervised probation following his release.

Mickle was originally indicted in Sept. 2024 with assault with intent to commit murder in Indian Country, assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country, assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country, and use, carry, brandish, and discharge a firearm during an in relation to a crime of violence.

According to court documents, the victim requested leniency against Mickle. She acknowledged that he deserved to go to prison for a period of time for his conduct, but repeatedly conveyed her belief it “was a drug-induced accident as opposed to a willful attempt to kill her.”

An affidavit filed in the case states deputies from the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office were called to the McAlester Regional Health Center after a woman was brought into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the head.

The woman told deputies Mickle got into an argument with her when he grabbed her by the throat and choked her before she felt something on her head, the affidavit states.

“At first, the victim thought (Mickle) had shot the wall; however, the victim realized she had suffered a gunshot wound because her ears were ringing, and she felt an indentation on the top of her head,” court records state. “Victim stated that after the gun went off, defendant started ‘freaking out’ and denied that he had shot her.”

The woman was taken to the hospital by a neighbor, where she was later flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa area hospital, according to the affidavit.

Mickle was arrested two weeks later following a manhunt.

Court records show he remains charged in Pittsburg County District Court with shooting with intent to kill, domestic assault and battery by strangulation, and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction.
