A Canadian man was arrested Monday night after allegedly firing a handgun during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, according to sheriff’s deputies.
Stanley Thomas Hyde, 49, was taken into custody after deputies responded to a 911 call around 8:30 p.m. reporting that he had fired shots while trying to prevent the victim from leaving his home in Canadian.
According to an affidavit from the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at Hyde’s residence on Old Highway 69 and found several individuals at the scene, including the victim. Deputies separated the parties to gather statements, but Hyde repeatedly interrupted and appeared agitated, prompting one deputy to draw a non-lethal pepper spray weapon as a precaution.
The victim told deputies that Hyde became upset after drinking alcohol and discussing their relationship. She said he allegedly threatened to kill himself and fired a gun while she was in the bathroom. When she came out, she believed he might point the weapon at her, so she fled. She reported hearing a second shot as she ran.
Deputies said Hyde admitted to firing a .357 revolver twice, once inside the house and a second time after the victim ran outside, allegedly to frighten her into staying. He denied intending to harm her.
A search of Hyde’s person revealed methamphetamine and ammunition, and authorities confirmed he had a prior felony conviction, though he produced paperwork showing he had received a governor’s pardon. Deputies were initially denied entry into the home, but Hyde later gave consent, and deputies recovered drug paraphernalia in plain view. The firearm was not located.
He is currently being held on a $50,000 bond and his next court date is set for July 10th.
